Since
the Eastside Sinfonietta CD came in 2003, I started writing
songs again with Steve Stewart and Nate Scoble.
The songs came from a writing process that I began with fellow writer
Irene Borger. I had started writing lyrics on my own, writing poems
about intimacy , friendship and issues of aging. I had been especially
struck by my last visit with my mother and step-father and the degree
of his depression brought about by progressive dementia. I kept writing
about memory…about it’s importance to our sense of self
and how incredibly fleeting it is…about how the act of remembering
is a physical thing and how scary it is when that ability suddenly alludes
you.
Musically, these new songs reflect a true eclectic approach and are
not indicative of any particular style. The arrangements were developed
over a long period with a truly creative group of musicians who contributed
greatly to the sound and character of the recordings. Guitarist Ken
Lasaine (who started accompanying me with with the Weill/Brecht
songs)
started the process by creating arrangements of these new songs…When
we were invited to perform at RedCat Theater for EarJam IV, we expanded
with Joe Berardi on
percussion and vibraphone and Jessica Catron on cello, later adding
Bob Remstein on keyboardsfor a concert at
