Catasonic Records

Catasonic Records is a joint project of Mark Wheaton and Weba Garretson to release and promote interesting work by us and our friends that would normally fall through the cracks of normal record labels.

Catasonic Records began as an independant record label in 1994 with the release of Webaworld. In 1995, we released four other records: Matt Heckert's Mechanical Sound Orchestra, Gynomite, 2 Bass Hit and Mark Wheaton Play's America's Favorite Award Winning Tunes. In 1997 we released Jac Zinder's Stay Home. We have just released as of October 2006 the new Puttansesca CD

Weba Garretson was initially known as the star of the Weba Show in the early eighties. a performance cabaret extravaganza directed by noted theater director David Schweizer and featuring Weba on vocals accompanied by Jerry Frankel on Piano and Phillip Littel on physical movement and ironic non verbal commentary. The Weba Show played to sold out club audiences in LA and was featured at the Playboy Jazz Festival and the Alan Thicke late night talk show.

Later Weba began a series of spoken/sung performance pieces accompanied by a free jazz combo featuring Joe Baiza on Guitar, Richie West on Drums, Rafa Gorodetsky on Bass and Scott Looney on Organ. The band played in clubs in LA and San Francisco and recorded this CD in 1994.

Following the Weba World project Weba formed the group Puttanseca with Rafa, Joe Baiza and Wayne Griffith.Look for a secial Made To Order release of the Puttanesca sessions here in the very near future.

Mark Wheaton

Plays Americas Favorite Award Winning Tunes!! CS-005
"If you want to freak someone out, bring them into your room and blast this as loud as you can."
- STRENGTH Magazine

Mark has composed music for performance artists since 1980 when he began working with Johanna Went. Many of the tracks on this CD were recorded as backing tracks for Johanna Went and Shrimps performances during the mid to late 1980's. Many of these tracks made use of early digital synths and samplers such as the Casio CZ-101, the Ensoniq Mirage, and several Roland instruments. They were sequenced on a Mac Plus using Opcode's Midimac Sequencer (preceding the product called StudioVision). The recordings were mixed to DAT in early versions of the Catasonic Studios on Oceanview Ave. in LA.

Mark Wheaton

Objects of the Dealer CS-007

this a commercially replicated CD and wil play on any CD player.

This CD was produced as part of the catalog for the exhibition Commotions: Martin Kersels a retrospective of Martin's early work presented by the Madison Art Center, Wisconsin in 1998. Martin asked Mark to collaborate on a piece which was in that show entitled Objects of the Dealer with soundtracks, 1995.

There were a limited number of CDs produced for the catalog and the pressing had an over run of a few hundred copies. We are excited to now make these available. This is a collector's item and carries a higher price as a result.

Mark composed fourteen short soundtracks that were triggered when someone used the various "objects" that make up Martin's art dealer's office such as a fax machine, computer (Mac Plus) Desk Drawers, Dewalt Drill, Filo fax etc.Martin had rigged each object with a mercury switch that started a portable cassette with speakers that contained that soundtrack in a loop cassette such as was used in a answering machine. Mark and Martin have collaborated many times over the years including work that was done for Shrimps performances of which Martin was a member and Mark created soundtracks for in collaboration with Steve Stewart.

Here is an excerpt from one the Objects:

You can find excerpts from each Object on the Martin Kersels page
